At the time of the 2001 Census, the municipalities of Peel—Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon, experienced the second highest rate of growth among the Regions of Ontario. Between 1996 and 2001, the population of Peel grew from 852,525 to 988,948, reflecting an increase of 16% or an average increase of 27,250 people annually. The combined populations of Peel Region and Dufferin County has now reached well over 1 million.
